American Masters: Erik Darling and the American Folk Revival with Chico Schwall, Joanne Broh, Corwin Bolt, and Samuel Mitchell
May 11 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Erik Darling (1933-2008) was there when it happened. Washington Square, Greenwich Village. Inspired by the Weavers, he formed a calypso folk group, the Tarriers with Alan Arkin and Bob Carey. Made a jillion records as an accompanist (Ed McCurdy, Judy Collins, the Kossoy Sisters, etc). Replaced Pete Seeger in the Weavers when Pete was blacklisted, played with them during their most prolific period. Formed the Rooftop singers (“Walk Right In”) and made some great solo albums. He was also a fine painter and his memoir “I’d Give My Life” is great. The show will also deal with some history, some culture (the crossed paths of a search for authenticity playing music you didn’t learn from your parents), etc .
Sources: Darling’s memoir has a self-curated best-of collection of recordings. Also Weavers records, particularly from 1960-62. And the other artists mentioned above.
